Within the fichtel mountains
Weissenstadt lies within the Nature Park of the Fichtel Mountains, Upper Franconia, in the north-eastern corner of Bavaria. The area where we live and work is shaped by both Lake Weissenstadt on the edge of our town and the highest mountains in Franconia which surround the region.
The town and its inhabitants are particularly well served by nature. The mountains with their granite summits, the hills covered in verdant forests and the luscious green meadows create an idyllic landscape. The rivers Saale, Eger, Naab and Main all have their source within the prehistoric rocks of the Fichtel Mountains and flow from here in all directions.
The region’s character is shaped by nature and simplicity, far from the hustle and bustle of the city: it is a very relaxed place. PEMA wholegrain rye bread couldn’t have a better home. Wherever our bread is served, it serves as an ambassador for the region. Contained within every slice is our precious rye, pure spring water from the Fichtel Mountains and the care of the people who work here.

Home of endangered species
The Fichtel mountains lie between Franconian Switzerland (Frankische Schweiz), The Franconian Forest (Frankenwald), The Upper Palatinate Forest (Oberfaelzer Wald), The Bavarian Forest (Bayerischen Wald) and The Ore Mountains (Erzgebirge). The Landscape in central Europe plays an important role: the Fichtel Mountains are a migratory retreat, a breeding ground for a multitude of rare wild cats, black storks, red deer as well as the European Eagle owl. In recent years even lynx have been frequently spotted.
Kingfishers, beavers and dippers frolic in the region’s waters. In the clean streams freshwater mussels survive. Fire salamanders find their home here too. Both White and Black storks forage in the wet meadows and marshes to feed their broods. In the Fichtel Mountain’s rock caves several different types of bats have a frost-free place to live.
AN ELDORADO FOR WALKERS
Over 1200km of hiking trails thread as a network through the landscape. In addition, there are innumerable by-ways and local pathways. A veritable Eldorado for those seeking relaxation. Locals and tourists alike appreciate the peaceful valleys, moors, streams, lakes and rocky peaks.
The oldest public landscape gardens in Europe can be found in the Fichtel Mountains. The Luisenburg Rock Labyrinth, near Wunsiedel is a circular walk laid out between the rocks, leading you past over 300m year old granite rock formations, demonstrating the uniqueness of this special landscape. Thankfully, due to the engagement and determination of many local people, these landscaped gardens could be saved from otherwise certain destruction.
